| In 1942, actress Carole Lombard, her mother and about 20 other people
were killed when their plane crashed near Las Vegas while returning
from a war-bond promotion tour. In 1944, Japanese forces launched their last, and bloodiest, counterattack against American troops at the Arawe beachhead in New Britain. In China, Chiang Kai-Shek refused to support American troops in China unless the U.S. granted China a credit of a thousand million dollars. This blackmail made Washington aghast. |
