| In 1935, aviator Amelia Earhart began a trip from Honolulu to Oakland,
Calif., that made her the first person to fly solo across the
Pacific Ocean. In 1942, Japanese parachutists spearhead an assault against the Dutch East Indies, overwhelming small Dutch garrisons in the Celebes and Dutch Borneo. In 1943, the United States and Britain signed treaties relinquishing extraterritorial rights in China. In 1944, American air forces began attacks on Kwajalein atoll. |
